Benefits of puppy chews for your little ball of energy

Chews are the ideal distraction for your puppy while you have your morning coffee. Your puppy can chew and chew and chew while you give yourself a much-needed energy boost to keep up with theirs! But the benefits of puppy chew treats don’t end there — chews are great for exercising your puppy’s natural chewing instincts and keeping their teeth healthy and strong.
Here are just a few of the benefits that come with our yummy puppy chew treats!

We wanted to create yummy, chewy treats for dogs that’ll also help boost their overall health — so here are the benefits of the ingredients we choose for our dehydrated dog treats!

  • Relieves teething pain — Those razor-sharp little puppy teeth come in early. At around two or three weeks, your puppy’s baby teeth will start to come through and suddenly, they want to taste and nibble everything that comes their way. At three or four months, those teeth fall out to make way for their adult teeth — ouch! Puppy dental chews can help them massage their sore gums and help clean their teeth all at once.
  • Eliminates boredom — Just like toddlers and kids, puppies get bored easily and will find something to do when left to their own devices. Chewing takes a lot of concentration for your pup, so rather than sacrificing couch cushions and shoes, you can keep your puppy occupied with a tasty chew.
  • Relieves destructive behaviour — Chewing is part of your puppy’s natural instincts. Unfortunately, this can lead to some destructive behaviour… You don’t want to walk into a room that’s been turned upside down with your puppy sitting in the middle of it! A puppy chew will give your buddy some mental stimulation and help them exercise those natural instincts in a less destructive way.
  • Anxiety relief — Fireworks, thunderstorms and trips to the V - E - T can be very stressful for puppies and dogs. Chewing has been scientifically proven to trigger a release of endorphins, so a chewy treat will help your puppy feel less anxious during big or scary events.

Our puppy chew ingredients

Here at VitaPet, all of our puppy chews are made from all-natural ingredients like chicken, rabbit and rawhide — no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives — so you can rest assured knowing that your puppy is eating well.

  • Chicken — Lean, low calorie and packed with protein, your puppy will get a real energy boost from our chicken chews! Most of our chews, dog food and puppy food has some element of chicken in the ingredients, so it’s safe to say your puppy can eat chicken to their heart’s content.
  • Rabbit — Rabbit ears are a chewy treat for your teething puppy at around three to four months old. Their gums might feel sore and itchy for a while, so our Rabbit Ears with Chicken Paste will help alleviate some discomfort — plus, rabbit ears are less often associated with food allergies.
  • Rawhide — Puppies and dogs love rawhide! It’s chewy and tasty for your puppy but also helps to prevent plaque and tartar build-up through your pup’s natural chewing actions. Think of rawhide as a low-effort toothbrush for your puppy.

High in protein and low in fat, our puppy chew treats are bound to keep your pup happy throughout the day! Browse through our collection of puppy chews and find us in-store to stock

FAQs about our puppy chews

How many chews can I give my puppy per day?

It depends on the size of your puppy! As a rule, we recommend one treat per day for extra small dogs and puppies (i.e. 2 - 2.5 kilograms). For larger puppies (i.e. 2.5 - 5 kilograms) we recommend one or two treats a day. This will keep them satisfied and distracted without going overboard!

If you’re feeling unsure about how many treats to give your puppy, be sure to check in with your veterinarian. They can provide more detailed recommendations and advice based on your puppy’s weight, breed and age.

Can I give my puppy a chew before going out?

You should always supervise your puppy while they’re having a treat! Some puppies and dogs tend to get over-excited and gulp down their treats without chewing them properly, so we recommend keeping an eye on them while they’re chewing away.

My puppy has food allergies, what do you recommend?

If your puppy seems to be sensitive to certain foods like chicken or beef, you might want to try rabbit ears/rabbit treats instead. Rabbit is less likely to be associated with allergies, so this might be the better solution for your pup.
